FIFTEEN

THE MOANING CAVERNS were in a state of controlled chaos when Neveah arrived. That chaos had nothing to do with the unsuspecting humans who normally inhabited the place. No tourists roamed the area, blissfully ignorant of the infernal gate that lay beneath them. No employees manned the park. The buildings and cave attractions were deserted.

Or... almost deserted, anyway.

A familiar demon stood sentry on the steps leading up to the gift shop. It was one of the guards she’d insulted when she’d barged out of Hell mere days ago. She didn’t know his name.

“Hello,” she greeted, walking up to him with a tiny wave. “Are we going to have to fight, or can I go down to the gate?”

It was pure bluff. She could at least walk in a straight line now, but one cuff from the demon’s meaty fist would leave her sprawled on the ground in a heap.

He gave her a sour look. “You can go down.”

She relaxed. “Oh, good. I suppose that means Nigellus has already made his report to the Council.”

The guard shrugged, his furled wings lifting and lowering with the movement. “S’pose so. Above my pay grade, really.”

“I can sympathize,” she told him. “I’m sorry about earlier, by the way. I had important places to be, but that’s no excuse for rudeness.”

His sour expression hadn’t eased, but apparently making trouble for her was also above his pay grade. “As long as we’re not going to have angels trying to smite us on top of everything else.”

The pain of Heaven’s rejection, still too fresh, stabbed at her heart. “No danger of that,” she said.

Leaving him, she entered the main building. It was the same place where she’d interviewed clueless human witnesses about the disappearance of an innocent college girl in the aftermath of a mysterious and brutal murder. It felt like years ago, though it had been only weeks. She spared a thought for Alice, wondering if there would be any possible way to right the wrong Mab had done when she’d stolen the poor girl’s body.

Metal stairs led down into the caverns. The eerie moaning sound that gave the place its name grew in pitch and volume as she trekked deeper. It was an exhausting journey on foot—or at least, it was exhausting when you’d barely recovered from nearly discorporating.

The bowels of the cavern system teemed with far more activity than the surface did. Layers of magical protection slid over her angelic form, failing to stick. Some of them felt like they’d be pretty brutal to anything mortal. What a pity that they’d be utterly useless against the Wild Hunt.

Torches marked the area around the gate. Swords and pikes bristled at her as she approached the guards stationed there. But once again, Nigellus had come through, and she was allowed to pass. After proving that she was able to travel through the gate unassisted in both directions—and was therefore not a Fae in magical disguise—she turned to the nearest guard.

“Do you know where I might find Nigellus?” she asked.
